New DLF-TRIFOLIUM subsidiary in Russia

Russia is a crucial growth market for Danish grass seed, and DLF-TRIFOLIUM has succeeded in obtaining a major share of the Russian imports of grass seed.

Central government in Russia has decided to strengthen their foodstuff policy.

To DLF-TRIFOLIUM this means the establishing of a new subsidiary thus enhancing their sales of quality forage grasses for the Russian milk producers.

New outstanding varieties for the season 2010/11

A steady flow of new improved varieties are beeing released from the intensive R&D work at DLF-TRIFOLIUM.  This year- 13 new forage- and 7 new turf varieties.

In forage the most significant improvements are in the intermediate and late group of perennial ryegrass and in Hybrid ryegrass.

In perennial ryegrass two of the varieties namely Indicus 1 and Dexter 1 has already got the extra recommendation in Germany for low land –the so called “M”

Quality and very high yields are key words as well for the new forage varieties.

In turf the two perennial ryegrasses namely Greensky and Greenglide is the very top for wear tolerance in Germany.  Slender creeping red fescue Valdora is ranking top across Europe and the new tall fescue variety Cannavaro is “probably the best tall fescue in the world”.

Festulolium in South America: The Real Alternative

Festulolium varieties result from the crossing between Festuca Pratenses or Arundinacea and perennial or hybrid ryegrasses, which are selected for their high tolerance to drought stress and temperature resistance since they can flourish in the typical summers in the region.

Festulolium combines the best traits in Festuca (it is rustic, perennial and stress tolerant) with the best features found in Ryegrass (palatability, regrowth speed and sugar content).

Having been successfully introduced in Argentina (mainly in the Southeast of the Buenos Aires Province), Festulolium has become a DLF “new” and recognized species for which sales forecasts are promising.

In Chile, Festulolium was tested in the Autumn of 2010.

On August 25 and 28, the product was launched together with our Forage grass SG 2000 dealer covering the main dairy cattle breeding area from Los Angeles to Osorno, situated 900 kms South of Santiago.

We expect a rapid and solid growth since this species offers a highly visible benefit for Chile’s cattle breeding conditions providing rusticity, palatability and good sugar content.

The varieties chosen so far are Perun and Hycor. Lofa is another alternative for the near future.

iSeed® knocks the stripes off noncoated mixture

The first field trials ever conducted in Britain on new iSeed® have brought dramatic results.

The trials were undertaken by Matthew Merchant, Head Groundsman at Old Trafford, home of Lancashire County Cricket Club. Taking Old Trafford’s practice areas as his testbed, Merchant sowed Johnson’s Ji Premier Wicket in strips running side by side with a comparable non-coated competitor’s seed.

The difference between the two seed-types trialled was most startling in the larger test area. Merchant commented on the the sheer difference in greenness giving an impression of light and shade “After two weeks of growth, we’d never usually expect coverage as good as this,” he added. “The results we found with the iSeed® would be comparable to another full overseeding with a non-coated seed, and even then the colour would not be as brilliant as this – we’re extremely pleased with the results.”

Grass seed will increase in price!

We can be pleased that the consumption of grass and

clover increased in 2009/10 in most markets. Especially

the forage and retail market experienced positive growth in

sales compared with 2008/09.

It is a fact that the 2010 seed harvest will be the smallest

for several years at a European level. Harvest acreage in

2011 will be at the same level as 2010. For both seasons,

we expect that consumption by far will exceed production.

Therefore, due to the rapidly decreasing inventory and the

trend towards increasing cereal prices, we expect prices to

keep on climbing, as we have seen during the last 3 months.

Preference for red fescue for normal lawns

The visual merit is the most important factor when enjoying the lawn.

High Density and fineness of leaves is appealing to the eyes, Red fescue is the species that fulfils this 100% and it can be strongly recommended to utilise this to the outmost in mixtures for lawns whose wear tolerance is not the highest demand.

The enclosed photo is taken on the 10th of September of demo plots in Denmark, showing a mixture with high content of red fescue on the right and a high content of perennial ryegrass on the left. All visitors to the plots prefer the fescue mixture!

ForageMax overseeding system

Increase sward output by over 40%

In grassland  productivity will fall over the lifetime of a sward. This fall can be as much as 50% in terms of animal performance. Weed grasses play a major role in this as they affect yield, but more importantly the quality of the grass. This problem can be controlled  with good grassland management which includes regular overseeding, young swards can be maintained in peak production for much longer than previously expected.

DLF Forage Development Trials

-       Adding value to grassland

A good forage mixture of grasses and clovers consists of the best obtainable varieties. Here probably very few can disagree – however, when you start a discussion of what exactly are the characteristics for a good grass or clover variety, there will be a number of opinions.

At the end, focus of course shall be on the farmers economy, so our aim as breeders must be to provide the best varieties with the best possible documentation for all relevant properties. For this purpose we at DLF-TRIFOLIUM carry out a large number of Forage Development Trials – along with the even greater number of trials done for breeding purposes.

Trial subjects

At the moment we have trials in the ground looking for answers to some key questions for future grassland farming:

Forage Quality

Varieties of grasses vary when looking at main quality parameters like digestibility of organic matter and cell walls (NDF), protein and sugar content etc. Selecting and describing varieties with the highest feeding value is therefore very important.

iSeed for forage grasses

iSeed has already shown remarkable results in trials as well as in practical farming when used for forage grasses. We are of course looking for further knowledge on this product – i.e. for overseeding, replacement of  seedbed fertilizer, late sowing etc.

Forage solutions for dry areas

Water is a limited resource in many areas and in the future we probably will have to cope with even dryer conditions. We are looking for grasses and combination of grasses and legumes which are able to produce feed also when the precipitation is scarce.

ForageMax development

The forage mixture brand, ForageMax, of course needs constant attention. We have an ongoing testing of new varieties, species and combinations which, if proven worthy, will end as new or revised ForageMax mixtures.

ForageMax Overseeding

Another successful DLF-TRIFOLIUM concept is the ForageMax Overseeding. The continuing trials are still showing new convincing results concerning the benefits of keeping the sward young by introducing new plants into the old field.

The Trial Network

DLF Forage Development Trials are located at a number of our breeding stations throughout Europe (Denmark, England, Holland, France and Czech Republic). Furthermore we use data from trials at Lopuszna in southern Poland as well as Smolensk and Kursk in Russia. All trial plots are of course attended with a professional set-up and collection of data.

The fields are open

The Forage Development Trials are located alonside a large number of demonstration plots at our trial stations. Here it is possible to see a great part of our variety and mixture portfolio – and of course also the forage development trials. If you are interested in a visit to one of our trial stations to see for yourself, please don´t hesitate to contact us.

Festulolium of increasing importance - also in Germany

A bouquet of new forage varieties have been approved in Germany this spring. Four Perennial Ryegrasses, one Meadow Fescue, two Hybrid Ryegrasses and not less than three Festulolium varieties.

Approval of the three Festulolium varieties mirrors the efforts and confidence DLF-TRIFOLIUM puts in breeding of Festulolium. ACHILLES and PERSEUS are of the ryegrass type with very high quality and MAHULENA is of the Tall Fescue type with very high production of green and drymatter.

In the new issue of Prograss is an article about the new varieties, incl. the Festuloliums. Read more.

Overseeding turf with success

The servere winter in all of Europe has created a need for repairment of lawns and sports areas. For professionals overseeding is a normal routine and a number of fantastic equipment for the job is at hand.

For newcomers it can be difficult to imagine what overseeding can do. The photo shows the result of overseeding of a football pitch and the lines of new established grass plants are seen.

For the superior use of overseeding please take a look at the results in South Africa where DLF is supplier of grass seed for the soccer world championship, read more.

Winter Damage in Lawns

After a long and hard winter, many lawns look miserable. Often you see bare patches in the lawn, where the grass has withered away. Sometimes the problem extends to the entire lawn leaving it with nearly only bare patches – a typical symptom of the worst known diseases in our northern hemisphere – the pink snow mould.
