Masterline wins silver medal in Moscow

We are pleased to announce that one of our Russian distributors "Vostok-Agro" has been awarded a silver medal for the Masterline grass mixtures in the competition "Best quality product". The award was granted in connection with the 15th international Exhibition "Flowers - 2008" held in Moscow.

Company specialists prepared a presentation of lawns sown with Masterline and brought all necessary documentation - including ISTA-certificates and Russian certificates of quality to the exhibition. The judges were convinced that Masterline grass mixtures are of the second highest quality in the world and one of the best professional turf products. Very positive effects of iSeed® in forage and turf

iSeed®, the nutrient seed coating for grasses, has been successfully tested in independent field trials in many European countries. In forage, the yield potential of new high yielding forage varieties can be realised more efficiently with iSeed®. First results indicate a yield increase of 5% in the first year.

iSeed® contains 20% nitrogen in the coating. As the seed weight increases by 100%, the end product contains 10% N and 2% P in total. Depending on the sowing rate, considerable amounts of fertiliser can be applied through iSeed®. From a normal seeding rate of 3 kg grass seed/100 m2 in turf = 6 kg iSeed/100 m2. This means about 60 kg N/ha!

In turf, iSeed® shows higher numbers of seedlings as well as faster germination and establishment, resulting in a denser sward containing fewer weeds. This means a sports field that can be played on earlier. In the UK the STRI concluded after field trials in 2006: “The iSeed treatment significantly affected establishment and growth, improving the rate of both.”

Additional benefits of iSeed® for both turf and forage are the combined application of seeds and fertilisers, which saves time and money. And finally, the fast and slow release fertiliser ensure a more even and constant grass growth during several weeks.

Salt tolerant grasses

Future grasses not only have to cope with climate changes; in some areas they will have to deal with critical salt levels in the soil. The number of salt affected areas is already high and still increasing.

DLF-TRIFOLIUM’s R&D division has taken up this challenge and experiments are now conducted in which only the best and most salt tolerant plants are selected for variety development. Read more

HorseMax – Unique Mixtures for Horses

There are several million horses around the world – all of them need feed from grass and a place to exercise. DLF-TRIFOLIUM offers horse paddock mixtures for a wide range of areas and has already gained a lot of experience in this particular segment. We have now put all this experience into a new brand, HorseMax, which in one word says that it is the best mixture for horses.

Many horse owners know a lot about horses, but have only limited experience with establishment and maintenance of grassland. Therefore we not only offer guidance in choosing the right mixture, we also offer a basic guide on how to get the field established in the best way.

Success of Overseeding System in Agricultural Grassland

The trial results show outstanding improvement in grassland performance following a comprehensive three year replicated overseeding trial at DLF-TRIFOLIUM’s research and development centre in Gloucestershire, UK.

The trials were sown three years ago to a high output base mixture containing Solid and Citeliac Hybrid Ryegrass with Premium and Calibra intermediate perennial ryegrass. This mixture has performed extremely well over the three years, but where it has been annually overseeded using the various specially designed ForageMax mixtures for Cutting, Grazing and Dual Purpose use, the improvements have significantly exceeded all expectations.

Big differences in Nitrogen response by turf and forage grasses

By the same amount of applied Nitrogen, those varieties developed for forage production have a growth almost 60 % higher than seen by varieties designed for turf. This is the result of an aimed plant breeding towards – on one hand – forage varieties capable of turning nitrogen into high dry matter production, and – on the other hand – turf varieties growing slowly but dense.

These greenhouse trials at DLF-TRIFOLIUM have furthermore shown, that there also between varieties of same type (turf or forage) are great differences in their ability to utilise Nitrogen. This knowledge is now used for selecting varieties with the best possible Nitrogen use efficiency, meaning high forage production per kg applied N for forage grasses and the most beautiful lawn with the lowest N input for turf varieties. Both are for the benefit of economy as well as the environment.

New Listings in France Meet the Needs of the Future

Turf

Three new varieties of slender creeping red fescue have been listed: AMARONE, VALDORA and TOUCAN. This is in direct line with the future of more sustainable golf as red fescue is a low input species.

Forage

Improved rust resistance and impressive yield are characteristics that all new listings of forage varieties have in common.

Perennial ryegrass

No less than seven brand new perennial ryegrass varieties have been listed. Perennial ryegrass is the most important perennial forage grass species offering quality and yield: ALUTUS (2n intermediate), MEZO (2n late), CATABI 1 (4n intermediate), CHIFORD 1 (2n late), ALCANDER (4n late).

And two tetraploids (one intermediate and one late) await name approval. So new, high quality perennial ryegrasses will be available in all important heading segments.

Italian ryegrass

Two new varieties have been approved; diploid KURI 1 and tetraploid ELVIS.

Annual/Westerwoldicum ryegrass

One diploid variety awaits name approval.

Red clover

Two new diploid varieties have been approved; VENDELIN and SUEZ. Type-wise they are in the core of the red clover market – both ideal in terms of dormancy/earliness.
